Transend Integrates Exchange Web Services (EWS) Support into Transend Migrator to Enhance Migrations to and from Microsoft Exchange and Office 365
PALO ALTO, CA – June 12, 2012 — Transend Corporation, a leading provider of email migration and conversion solutions, today announced that Transend Migrator, its market leading email migration and conversion solution, now supports Exchange Web Services (“EWS”) as an enhanced method of migrating email data to and from all versions of Microsoft Exchange, including Exchange 2007, 2010 and Office 365.
EWS is a comprehensive, standards-based API that enables custom applications to interact with the Exchange store over HTTP. While legacy Exchange servers still support the use of the MAPI API, there are compelling reasons for organizations to migrate their email data via EWS. EWS is the preferred interface method for Office 365 and eliminates many obstacles that are present when migrating via the MAPI and IMAP protocols.
“Transend Migrator, while still able to migrate data via MAPI and IMAP, is one of the few email migration products on the market to integrate with Microsoft’s Exchange Web Services. This MAPI-replacement is the direction Microsoft has already committed to going forward and makes it easy for almost any platform or device that can connect to the Internet to interact with Exchange mailboxes and their contents, including e-mail messages, calendars, contacts and tasks” says Joshua Krefetz, Transend’s Vice President, Business Development. “Any migration utility that claims to migrate efficiently to Office 365 or any Exchange server hosted in the cloud, but doesn’t support EWS – they are simply behind the times. EWS is the gold-standard for migrating to the cloud, both today and tomorrow.”
Benefits of migrating into Office 365 with EWS (rather than via MAPI or IMAP):
Batch Migrations – Because of security issues, performing a batch migration into Office 365 is easier to set up and administer with EWS. EWS allows Transend Migrator to take advantage of Impersonation and Delegate Access, which allow an administrator to perform a centralized batch migration without having to know each user’s password.
Efficiently Migrate All Data Types – Unlike the IMAP protocol, EWS allows administrators to migrate all email data types (messages/folders/attachments, calendars, address books and tasks) together in a one-step batch migration. When migrating via IMAP, calendars, contacts and tasks are not supported.
Increased Throughput – EWS is a much faster method than MAPI. MAPI uses a lower level connection method called RPC over HTTP (also known as “Outlook Anywhere”) which adds overhead to the connection traffic. EWS uses SOAP/XML over HTTP, which generally accounts for migration throughput twice that of MAPI.
No MAPI Conflict – One disadvantage of MAPI is that it sometimes conflicts with other APIs installed on a workstation (particularly GroupWise) which can cause migration errors. No such conflict exists with EWS.
Anywhere Access – Exchange Web Services offers “anywhere access”. That means any messaging client sitting on a company intranet, connecting from the Internet or connecting via a wireless device can take advantage of EWS. Unlike with MAPI, the Outlook client does not need to be installed on the migration workstation when migrating via EWS.
Use of XML – EWS uses the Extensible Markup Language (XML) to provide the standard message format for the exchange of information between Exchange Server and the mail client. XML is an established framework for creating a custom language. In this case the custom language is the Exchange Server language. The beauty of XML is that it can be used to share information between different computer platforms and applications without having to pass through interpreters.
Unlike the MAPI protocol, XML is also an open standard and is becoming more and more prevalent in the Microsoft world. Office 2007 for Windows and Office 2008 for Mac both now ship with the new XML file formats that are flat and more easily exchanged cross-platform. XML can be used in other ways too such as E-mail storage, preference lists and general data storage for access by multiple applications.
